"Taking pain pills to "get through the day" is like applying novacaine on your hands and putting them in a fire. You may feel no pain, but it may be better for you to feel it. Taking pain pills allows you to injure yourself.
On the other hand, taking medication to ease pain for sleep makes sense. You are unlikely to injure yourself at night by dulling the discomfort. One could argue for pain pills at night since the body heals most effectively during sleep.
During the day, however, pain relievers numb your body so that you can do exactly what your brain is trying to prevent you from doing. The general rule is to stay aware of your limitations during the daytime to prevent further injury."
